Job Summary:
The licensed mental health counselor is authorized to provide mental health services in New York and reports to the clinical coordinator or director. They provide clinical support for their assigned students, collaborating with education, clinical, and campus life teams, as well as parents, to develop strategies that enhance students' academic, mental, and social progress according to individualized support and behavior plans. This role supports ITEP design and implementation, serving as a vital part of the transdisciplinary team with key communication duties. The clinician conducts assessments to establish social supports, delivers therapy, and develops behavior plans. Having access to confidential information, discretion and independent judgment is required.
Position Type & Expected Hours of Work
- Full-time, Monday – Friday, 8:15am – 4:15pm
- As an exempt role, there may be additional work required outside these hours as dictated by the needs of our students and/or the program.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of students' functional, behavioral, emotional, and transitional needs, with regular reassessments.
- Develop and support data collection systems across academic, community, and campus life areas, and analyze data to adjust programs for student progress.
- Apply safe, individualized treatment approaches centered on each student’s strengths, supporting behavioral and emotional needs.
- Engage families through family therapy, parent training, and on-campus visits as appropriate.
- Collaborate to develop and implement behavioral support plans (e.g., BIPs, ISPs, FBAs) and provide training to improve behavioral outcomes.
- Provide flexible clinical support, including after-hours or weekends as needed, and manage crisis intervention and classroom support.
- Lead group counseling sessions and ensure student progress through collaboration with clinical, educational, and campus teams.
- Maintain proactive communication with care providers, families, and team members to address student progress and emergencies.
- Keep accurate records, participate in professional development, and engage in community outreach and education as needed.
Requirements:
Education & Experience:
- New York State LMHC or license eligible, current and in good professional standing
- Master’s degree in mental health counseling or related field required
- 3 years of experience in therapy delivery/counseling is required, 5 plus years is preferred
- Experience working with students with developmental disabilities or on the autistic spectrum is strongly preferred; school experience is a plus.

- Proficient in clinical services with sound analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic environment, valuing diversity and flexibility.
- Skilled in multi-tasking, decision-making under pressure, and discretion.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; able to learn and use Shrub Oak internal systems.
- Ability to obtain TCIS training and remain current on required trainings
- Ability to maintain licensure/certifications per state requirements
Physical Requirements/Demands:
A workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; work regularly requires sustained concentration. Standing for sustained periods of time, bending, stretching, walking up and down stairs (building has 6 floors), around a hilly campus as needed, may also require walking between floors or between buildings at a moment’s notice. Crisis intervention and support required, as needed.
Work Environment:
We are a boarding school located on a 127-acre campus. The work environment will include both indoor and outdoor spaces, mostly inside the classroom or educational environment. May include work within the residential setting. The building has 6 floors accessible by staircases and elevators.
